Girl's Days

Girls Days

Second guest entry by Kelly

When Lauren and Tahmi and I get together, several things are certain to happen. You can count on food thats bad for you, very possibly Frappucino/alcohol drinks, Dog beer, a bad movie or two (not selected by Tahmi. We dont trust her anymore.) and/or power shopping, if were out and about. We dont usually mix alcohol and being out and about, unless someone volunteers to drive. How responsible we are! (I never volunteer to not drink.) (Neither does Lauren.) (That leaves Tahmi, who has recently re-discovered alcohol, and is not wont to abstain when were getting silly.)

A typical outing of ours might be driving to CR or Des Moines for a Purpose. We dont just get in the car and drive for freakin hours for nothing. There has to be something really special, like, say, food; or maybe shopping. Were picky, see?

All three of us manage to gel quite well; they know to drop me at TJ Maxx as soon as we get there, and pick me up on the way out of town. Once I almost had to punch Tahmi. She tried to get me out of TJs in an hour. She quickly saw the error of her ways, and peace was restored. Its amazing how flexible a person can be when threatened with physical violence. [If there is a 12 Step program for TJ Maxx addiction, we need to send Kelly. Shes a second generation addict, and although I appreciate the shopping opportunities that TJ provides, there comes a point where you just have to put down the cool purse and move onto another shopping venue. Lauren]

We let Lauren stop at every Goodwill and second-hand and hospital store that might have books, and we even help her carry them out. I think Lauren has more books than our library. Actually, that wouldnt be that difficult. We live in a really small town. I was over at Laurens a couple of days ago, and her dining room (in which I have NEVER dined) [But that would be so normal besides eating at the coffee table in front of the TV is way more cultural Lauren] was waist-deep in books. I couldnt see her office, which looked like the aftermath of an earthquake in a bookstore. Tahmi and I have become adept at helping Lauren select rare and lucrative books for resale. And you should see the old cookbooks we make her get! Be afraid if Lauren offers to cook something from the vintage collection. You will wind up a bachelor in horn-rimmed glasses, living in Kansas City in a pink gingham apartment, with a mother named Enid. Theres no place like home! (By the way, Lauren is great at finding books. You can hire her to get some for you, and the trick is to get her to ship them before Spike moves them.) [ I know, I know I found some very cool books for Kelly for her birthday - including Jeff Foxworthys White Trash Cookbook, and a Janet Evanovich and theyre buried somewhere in one of my piles of books, which Im afraid to disturb at risk of a bookalanche]

Tahmi is an easy shopping date. If you let her go to Barnes & Noble and charge up on Frappucino and chocolate cake [ Chocolate CHEESECAKE Lauren ], shes good for the day. And very entertaining at that! One car trip, she did an interpretive reading of soft-core porn that was so convincing, I nearly drove off the road. She really missed her calling as a phone sex worker. And now shes becoming a nun. Shell always be our little girl, though.

I rely on our trips as my update on the latest tv shows. I dont have cable, and live outside of a very small town, so I dont get any tv stations. At all. Tahmi and Lauren cant really fathom it, and they have taken it as their civic duty to keep me posted on the important tv shows. Most of which I have never, and will never, see. I can now act out the season finale of Buffy the Vampire Slayer for you, though. Its as though they were discussing family, or close friends.[ They ARE!!! - Lauren] I think its goofy enough to get overly involved in the lives of other peoples pets, but tv characters? Did I ever do this? Probably not since the Partridge Family went off the air.
